Age calculation sounds simple — and for most purposes, it is. But once you start thinking about it carefully, the nuances stack up quickly: leap years, varying month lengths, time zones, and the fundamental question of what we mean when we say someone is a certain age.

The Standard Method

The standard Western age calculation works like this: start from the date of birth and count how many complete calendar years have elapsed. Then count the remaining complete months. Then count the remaining days. This gives you age in the format "X years, Y months, Z days."

For example, if you were born on June 15, 1992 and today is April 9, 2026, your age is 33 years, 9 months, and 25 days. Not just "33" — but precisely 33 years, 9 months, and 25 days.

Handling Leap Years

Leap years — years divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400 — add February 29th to the calendar. For example, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 were all leap years, as will be 2028 and 2032. This creates an interesting edge case: people born on February 29th technically only have a birthday once every four years.

In practice, most countries and legal systems treat February 28th as the legal birthday in non-leap years (though some jurisdictions use March 1st). Our calculator handles this gracefully: if your birthday is February 29th, we count complete years correctly and note the adjustment.

Counting Total Days, Hours, and Seconds

Beyond years, months, and days, it can be fascinating to see your age in other units:

• Total days: Count every calendar day from birth to today, including all leap year days.
• Total hours: Multiply total days by 24.
• Total minutes: Multiply total hours by 60.
• Total seconds: Multiply total minutes by 60 — a 30-year-old is around 946 million seconds old.

Age in Different Cultural Systems

Not all cultures count age the same way. The most notable alternative is the traditional Korean age system, in which everyone is born as age 1 and then gains a year on January 1st each year — not on their actual birthday. This means a Korean baby born on December 31st is technically 2 years old the very next day.
